What does it mean if a prisoner is released on licence?

Some prisoners are released from prison ‘on licence’. This means they will be supervised by Probation for the remainder of their sentence and will have to comply with certain conditions which are designed to protect the public, prevent re-offending and reintegrate the offender into the community.
